Back up and recover a Hidy Vault

Updated 24 October 2026 · By Hidy

A backup protects the copy. Your recovery phrase protects access to it.

Save the phrase for this vault

Each vault can have its own 12-word recovery phrase. Save it privately somewhere outside Hidy. Anyone who obtains the phrase and the corresponding encrypted backup may be able to open that backup.

Make an encrypted backup

From the vault's Settings, export a backup file to a place you control, or enable encrypted iCloud backup. Check that a backup completed before relying on it. Recovery and backups are included in the free plan.

Want photos your iPhone passcode can't open?

Hidy Vault keeps photos, videos and documents in encrypted vaults that open only with a pattern you draw. No account, no Hidy server. Free for 3 vaults.

Restore on another iPhone

On Hidy's lock screen, choose the restore option for your backup source. Select the backup and enter that vault's recovery phrase. iCloud restore also needs access to the Apple account that holds the cloud backup.

Keep the old device and backup until you have verified the files on the destination. Do not uninstall Hidy or reset its Keychain as a troubleshooting shortcut.

If you forgot the pattern

Choose the recovery-phrase option from lock-screen settings and use a valid phrase for that vault. Without the pattern or a valid recovery phrase, Hidy support cannot reset the encryption for you.

Backups and the decoy feature

The optional Pro decoy pattern permanently removes other local vaults when drawn. It is a destructive action, not a normal unlock or recovery tool. Read the app's warning carefully, and do not experiment on data you need.

Contact support if you are unsure which restore option to use

If you plan to uninstall, check whether deleting the app deletes your photos first.
