Device sync: the same vault on your other devices
With Pro, a vault can stay in sync across your devices. Changes travel through your own iCloud account, encrypted on the device before upload, and each device keeps its own encrypted copy.
- Pro feature: Settings > Sync with my other devices, on top of iCloud backup.
- Sync uses your own iCloud account. Content is encrypted before upload.
- Each device keeps its own copy. Turning sync off on one device doesn't erase the others.
Why sync, not just backup
A backup is for getting a vault back. Sync is for using it in more than one place: adding a photo on one device and finding it on the other. Both use the same encrypted iCloud copy. Sync just keeps every device reading from and writing to it.
How it works
- Sync needs iCloud backup and the vault's recovery phrase.
- Changes are encrypted on the device that makes them, then uploaded to your iCloud through Apple's CloudKit.
- Your other devices download the encrypted changes and merge them into their own encrypted copy.
- Items that aren't downloaded yet are fetched on a later sync, so a slow connection doesn't break the vault.
Hidy Vault keeps photos, videos and documents in encrypted vaults that open only with a pattern you draw. No account, no Hidy server. Free for 3 vaults.
Set it up
- On the first device, open the vault, go to Settings and turn on iCloud backup, then Sync with my other devices.
- On the other device, install Hidy Vault, choose Restore from iCloud on the lock screen, and enter the vault's recovery phrase.
- Choose a pattern for the vault on that device.
Limits to know
- Not instant. Sync depends on iCloud and the network. Give it a moment before assuming something is missing.
- Every synced device is a copy. Lose one, and its copy stays encrypted, but treat its pattern and the phrase as exposed if the device was unlocked.
- For other people, use sharing. Sync is for your own devices. To give someone else access, use vault sharing.
Frequently asked questions
Is sync the same as backup?
No. Backup keeps one encrypted copy in iCloud. Sync keeps the vault current on several devices. Sync builds on iCloud backup, so backup is turned on too.
Do I need the recovery phrase on the other device?
Yes. The vault's recovery phrase is what opens its encrypted iCloud copy on another device.
Is sync free?
No, sync across devices is part of Pro. iCloud backup on one device is free.
What happens if I stop syncing?
Other devices that were syncing keep their own copy of the vault.
