Are hidden photos saved to iCloud?
Yes. A hidden photo is still a photo in your library, so with iCloud Photos on it uploads to iCloud and appears in the Hidden album on your other devices. Hiding changes where a photo shows up, not whether it is backed up.
- Yes, it syncs. With iCloud Photos on, hidden photos upload and appear in the Hidden album on every device.
- It counts. Hidden photos use the same iCloud storage as the rest of your library.
- Hiding is not encryption. The Hidden album is locked on screen, but the file is a normal photo in your iCloud account.
What does the Hide button actually do?
Hiding a photo moves it out of your main library. Apple says a hidden photo disappears from the Library, from other albums and from the Photos widget. It then lives in the Hidden album, which on iOS 16 and later is locked by default. To see it, open Photos, go to Collections > Utilities > Hidden, then unlock with Face ID or Touch ID.
That is a change of location on screen. The file itself is untouched. It keeps its size, its format and its place in your photo library. So the question of whether it reaches iCloud has a simple answer: it behaves exactly like a photo you never hid.
Do hidden photos upload to iCloud Photos?
Yes. If iCloud Photos is on, every photo and video in your library syncs to iCloud, hidden or not. Apple describes iCloud Photos as keeping every photo and video in iCloud, with originals at full resolution, and changes on one device showing up on the others.
Hiding is one of those changes. Hide a photo on your iPhone and it becomes hidden on your iPad and Mac too. Unhide it on one device and it reappears everywhere. The Hidden album is not a separate storage area with its own rules.
To check whether iCloud Photos is on, open Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Photos and look at Sync this device. If it is off, hidden photos stay only on that iPhone, and they are not in iCloud Photos at all.
Hidy Vault keeps photos, videos and documents in encrypted vaults that open only with a pattern you draw. No account, no Hidy server. Free for 3 vaults.
Do hidden photos count toward your iCloud storage?
Yes. Hiding does not compress a file or move it to a cheaper tier. If you are near your storage limit, hiding photos will not free anything.
The one setting that changes what sits on your iPhone is Optimize Storage, which keeps smaller versions on the device while full-resolution originals stay in iCloud. That affects device space, not your iCloud total.
What about iCloud Backup instead of iCloud Photos?
These are two different systems, and it is easy to mix them up. Apple says that with iCloud Photos on, your photos and videos sync to iCloud and are not included in the daily iCloud Backup. Without iCloud Photos, the backup may include photos and videos.
Either way, a hidden photo is covered. With iCloud Photos on, it syncs. With iCloud Photos off but iCloud Backup on, it can be part of the backup. There is no setting where hiding a photo quietly excludes it from both.
Is a hidden photo private in iCloud?
This is where people expect more than iOS delivers. The Hidden album lock is a screen lock. It stops someone holding your unlocked phone from browsing those photos. It does not keep the photo out of your iCloud account.
Under Apple's standard data protection, iCloud data is encrypted but the keys are held in Apple data centers, so Apple can help with recovery. Only certain categories are end-to-end encrypted by default. Advanced Data Protection is the optional setting that end-to-end encrypts most iCloud data, including iCloud Photos, so only your trusted devices hold the keys.
If you turn on Advanced Data Protection, iCloud.com web access is disabled by default.
What hiding does not protect against
- Deletion. With iCloud Photos on, deleting a hidden photo on one device deletes it everywhere. It sits in Recently Deleted for up to 30 days.
- Storage pressure. Hidden photos still count, so they can push you over your iCloud plan.
None of this makes hiding useless. It is a good way to keep everyday photos out of sight. It is just not a privacy boundary.
How to keep a photo out of iCloud Photos
If the goal is a photo that never enters your iCloud library, you need a place outside the Photos app. A few honest options:
- Turn off iCloud Photos entirely. Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Photos > turn off Sync this device. This affects your whole library, not one photo, so it is a big trade.
- Use a vault app that encrypts before storing. The file is encrypted on the iPhone, and any backup is encrypted before it leaves the device.
- Delete the original after importing. If you move a photo into a vault, remove it from Photos so no readable copy stays in your library.
Hidy Vault works this way. Photos you import are encrypted with AES-256-GCM on the iPhone, and file names, thumbnails and folders are encrypted too. Its iCloud backup is encrypted on the device before upload and stored in your own iCloud. Hidy is coming to the App Store; there is no download link yet.
One limit worth stating plainly: an open vault is readable on screen, and Hidy has no independent cryptographic audit yet. Encryption protects the files at rest and in backup, not a phone someone is holding while the vault is unlocked.
The short version
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Do hidden photos sync to iCloud Photos? | Yes, if iCloud Photos is on. |
| Do they count toward iCloud storage? | Yes, at full size. |
| Are they end-to-end encrypted by default? | No. Advanced Data Protection changes that. |
| Does hiding remove them from other devices? | No. They stay hidden there too. |
| Does hiding keep them out of iCloud Backup? | No. They are covered either way. |
Hiding is about what you see when you open Photos. iCloud is about where the file lives. Treat them as separate questions and you will not be surprised later.
If you are weighing whether the Hidden album is enough, read what Apple's docs say about hidden photos and Apple.
If you want to stop the sync instead of just hiding a photo, see stop iCloud Photos syncing to other devices.
If you want the iCloud copy itself protected, see end-to-end encryption for photos.
Frequently asked questions
Do hidden photos take up iCloud storage?
Yes. Hiding does not shrink a photo or move it out of your library, so it counts toward your iCloud storage like any other photo or video.
Are hidden photos end-to-end encrypted in iCloud?
Not by default. Apple's standard data protection encrypts iCloud data but keeps the keys in Apple data centers. Advanced Data Protection, if you turn it on, end-to-end encrypts most iCloud data including Photos.
If I delete a hidden photo on my iPhone, does it delete everywhere?
Yes, with iCloud Photos on. Apple says deleting a photo on one device deletes it everywhere iCloud Photos is used. You can recover it from Recently Deleted within 30 days.
Does turning off Show Hidden Album remove the photos from iCloud?
No. That setting only hides the album on that iPhone. The photos stay in your library and stay in iCloud.
Can someone see my hidden photos through iCloud.com?
If they can sign in to your Apple Account, they can reach your iCloud Photos, including hidden ones. Advanced Data Protection disables iCloud.com web access by default.
